Dying Light (Alone, Drifting)

00003

A single small incandescent lightbulb is delicately affixed to a small stone with stainless steel wire. It appears to be drifting in the open air as it hangs downwards to form a pendant lamp. The bulb symbiotically nestles into the stone, providing each other company amongst the vastness of the space surrounding them.

As with the other DYING LIGHTS, the positioning of the steel wires is an artifact of the unplanned and haphazard process of providing enough tension to permanently affix the bulbs within their stone cradles. Because the bulbs themselves are bound to the stones, this means the bulbs physically cannot be replaced, so when they burn out, the lamp transitions into what it always already was: a sculpture. The lifespan of the sculpture as a lamp is entwined with the lifespan of the bulbs. The light the lamp provides becomes precious.
