Dying Lights (Descending Monolith)

00028

A series of four light bulbs nestle with the crevices of a large rock that hangs precariously downwards. The lights resemble lithophytic plants, ones that draw nutrients from the surface of the stones wherein they reside. The electrical wires from the lights grow epilithically upwards towards the top of the rock, and beyond, as they ascend towards the ceiling. Stainless steel wires affix the lighting elements to the rock. They are the refined, industrial, descendants of the crude minerals that the rock is composed of, and become visual outgrowths of the stone that symbiotically adhere the lights to their host.

The visual weight of the pendant is ominous, and it emphasizes the delicateness of the thin glass bulbs. It foretells a moment when the structure within the ceiling weakens for an instant and the mass crashes into whatever is beneath. It is a time that will never come, yet one that incessantly haunts the object. A monolith suspended in time midway through its descent. Upon recognizing this, the full extent of the lamp begins to dilate beyond the bulb - studded rock. It begins to envelop portions of the ceiling above, seeping into the structural beams holding the ceiling and pendant in place; and it projects downwards onto the surfaces below, forming a hypothetical blast radius. The true shape of the lamp is a column forming its trajectory towards its final resting place.
