Thank You (Happy Face Twice)

00032

The images of two smiley faces from two plastic shopping bags (of slightly different designs) are superimposed over one another but askew, the bags loosely draped over an aluminum wire frame in the shape of a spherical paper lantern.

The bags were composed this way (different bags, doubled) originally by the restaurant who packed the food for delivery. Maybe it was Thai, maybe it was Middle Eastern. The fact they sourced two similar but different bags was curious, a peek into a transition for the business between the package of plastic bags from one manufacturer to new one, a mundane event; or perhaps something else occurred that explains this trivial event, something equally unremarkable. The two different smiles, forced to remain contented and thankful in unison resonates the exhaustion portrayed of holding a grin longer than necessary. How the muscles in the face start to tire, how our faces are ill-equipped to present cheerfulness for more than brief moments at a time, and how the muscles relax unevenly, and the expression shades from happy to anguished so naturally. Surfacing smiles to mask the placid discontent beneath.

If one contorts oneself just right, the bulb aligns and illuminates through the faces, making the image extra cheerful.
