Dying Lights (Us)

00051

Two statues standing as intimately close as possible without quite physically touching.

Facing each other, eyes forever in contact, bodies, perhaps, never. A narrow chasm is between their bodies, it holds their light for each other before it spills outward into the world beyond. The two are unmoving as the air swirls around them and through them.

Silica reflects and quartz absorbs and iron stains.

The calm glitters and the longing welcomes and the darkness hardens.

Each statue is composed of smaller rocks, with metal rods inserted to bond them together. The strength of the stone around the metal spine is weak. Perhaps one day the bond will crack and one statue will fall onto the other, leaning on its partner, resting, relying, until their lights flicker out.

Perhaps the heat emanating from one bulb will magnify its partner, and perhaps that warmth will be too much, heat will permeate, cracks will form, and one bulb will give up, succumb to the pressure and, explode.
